Many of us are so busy with work or studying that we rarely have the opportunity to explore hobbies that truly bring happiness to our lives. If you aren’t quite sure what you would be interested in, here is a list of my top 10 favourite hobbies I think everyone should try at least once in their lives.

Music

This is one of the most popular hobbies for a reason, music has the power to drastically alter your emotional state like no other art form. Many people decide not to get into music because they have this idea that you have to dedicate your whole life to the art in order to derive any significant benefit from it, this is not true. Nowadays it is easier than ever to make music one of your hobbies. There is great free music software to get a taste of music production. There is also countless music tutorials online, giving you the opportunity to explore one of the most captivating art forms known.

Painting

The first time I painted I couldn’t believe the colour combinations I could make. I knew it was one of those things I would stick with it for a very long time. Not only is it calming, it is also one of the best ways to express the way you’re feeling and trying to project your emotions onto the canvas. If you can’t afford paints which can be quite expensive, there are many free digital art softwares like animation desk and Inkscape that are just as enjoyable.

Orhan Pamuk: “Painting is the silence of thought and the music of sight”

Dancing

Many of us only find the opportunity to dance when we’re out drinking at a club with friends but dancing is one of the easiest and most enjoyable hobbies to explore as all you need is music and maybe a little privacy if you’re not so confident in your dabbing skills. If you’re ever stressed out or not in the best of moods, there are few things better than putting on your favourite song and losing yourself in the moment.

Reading

With every book you open and every page you turn, you transport your mind to another world. Books allow the reader to take a step out of their own lives to live another, and come back with the experience of actually living it. Reading will make you more intelligent and open your mind to the endless possibilities of the imagination.

Writing

One of the oldest and most reliable ways of getting your thoughts out into the world is writing. Through writing you can express your ideas and opinions in the most eloquent way possible. Nowadays you have the option to write a book, start a blog or even just keep a personal diary for yourself. Writing gives us the opportunity to express what we feel when we don’t have the opportunity to do so with other people.

Brandon A. Trean: “A writer is simply a photographer of thoughts.”

One of the best ways to open your mind to the diversity of human culture is through traveling. Talking to new people with different beliefs and ways of living can help you re-evaluate your own perspective on life and also learn new things about yourself. Traveling can often be uncomfortable and sometimes even terrifying, but it’s always worth it.

Learning a new language opens you up to an entirely new world and stretches your imagination to the depths that monoliguists cannot reach. Similar to traveling, it helps you explore new ways of thinking and perspectives on life. You have access to more movies, music and books which in turn will give a much more interesting outlook on life and broaden your view of humanity.
